    asof Late I've been contemplating Turning my Windows 7 BBS into a linux server, and running my BBS on linux, Probably Ubuntu Server 26.04, I assume my user file and other important files can just be moved over? anyway I'll check the wiki 1st.
    I temporarily moved the BBS to a windows 10 machine.
    It will either be alot of fun, or a huge headache, or a little of both.

    I did an exercise a while back, moving from Windows 10 to Linux. Once I
    fulfilled all of the prerequisites and got a basic install up and
    running, I copied my ctrl directory over, then looked for all of the
    hard-coded c:\sbbs\ locations in the files.

    I didn't bother with DOS compatibility, as I'd gotten rid of most of my
    DOS doors and migrated my compression tools from DOS only to
    cross-platform tools.

    It's nice having Binkit/Tickit all part of Synchronet, so most
    everything moved all at once.

    As to my experience (I moved SBBS from Windows to Linux), the worst headache I've had was related to versions (3.18 to 3.19 or 3.20 if I remember correctly, I had it running on older Windows machine).

    I've installed the BBS on Linux machine from Git repo, then copied "ctrl", "data", "text" and so on. After that I pasted contents of SBBS's directories. Then came the fun part, cross-checking if every message base worked, resolving problems, missing config lines and incompatibilities. But now it works, as I can see.
    Sometimes I have to repair message bases, but I suspect it's a fault of systemctl that might cause unclean shutdowns of SBBS or a bit rot of some kind. Backups and SMButil help a lot. I haven't investigated it further yet.

    I moved my Synchronet setup from Windows to Linux 4 years ago. I basically just moved all my files over, including the configuration files & data files - basically my whole sbbs tree. For me, the biggest thing was going through to make sure the paths to all my doors in the external programs configuration were correct and that I had them set up correctly and running (either with native Linux versions, if possible, or to run with DOSBox).

    For FTN messages, I was already using BinkIt (which comes with Synchronet & is written in JavaScript), and that just kept running as expected in Linux.

    One thing I did on Linux is that I created a sbbs.service file so I could run Synchronet using systemd (systemctl), since I wouldn't be using sbbsctrl.exe anymore.

    If you have to repair your msg bases that's indictiave of a big issue.
    It could be bad memory or bad harddrive, filesystem corruption or whatever.
